Burton Nitta will share their artworks that aim to prompt debate, create alternative possibilities and inspire action. They will use their projects to explore how we can shift perceptions of ourselves. They ask us to consider drastic transformations to imagine responses to the largest challenges we face, such as climate change.

Toxic Art Histories

A workshop organised by the international research project “Bilderfahrzeuge. Aby Warburg’s Legacy and the Future of Iconology”.

8 – 9 November 2019

Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity,” Berlin.

From racially and financially motivated scholarship to the pseudo-science of conspiracy theories, art historical boogeymen are ubiquitous. The discipline of art history has deep, potentially inseverable, roots in explicitly nationalistic discourses and the relationships between art history and unsavoury political regimes are written into the scholarly record. Quarantining what we might think of as art historical contagion, however, let alone inoculating the discipline against its past infections, is far from straightforward. Contagion as a metaphor is rich with value and has proven productive in certain historical moments.

Bilderfahrzeuge Reading Group

Selected Tuesdays, 5.30pm, The Warburg Institute.

By demploying the term “Iconology”, Aby Warburg sought to distinguish his own methodology from the pervading art historical practices of his time, generating a nucleation point for new approaches in art history at the beginning of the 20th century. This reading group will study texts and authors that have similarly expanded the field of art history and visual studies over the last 20 years.

Image/Vessel

A workshop organised by the international research project “Bilderfahrzeuge. Aby Warburg’s Legacy and the Future of Iconology”.

17th – 18th June 2019

The Warburg Institute

By addressing images and vessels with regard to their qualities as carriers and containers, this workshop sets out to think past conventional oppositions of visuality and materiality. Through a series of conversations based on readings and case studies, it seeks to open up new transdisciplinary and transcultural perspectives for interrogating the very notions of ‘image’, ‘thing’ and ‘object’ in space, time, cultures and media.

Paintings in Exile. The Wanderings of French Art in the Americas 1939-1947.

During the spring of 1939, French cultural propaganda services shipped numerous works of art from public and private collections to Argentina, to be displayed at the Buenos Aires Museum of Fine Arts.Trapped on the other side of the Atlantic after the outbreak of the war, these paintings (including major pieces by David, Ingres, Delacroix, Manet and Monet) then toured Latin America and the United States during the conflict.
